    Description

For auction is a wonderful piece of arts and crafts art pottery made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Mass. I have a "Lotus bowl"  or "Leaf and Bud" planter that is done in Grueby's most desired curdled matte green glaze. The planter is a nice cabinet size as it is 7 1/2" in diameter and 2 7/8" tall. The bottom or the foot has a diameter of  3" in the  non glazed area.
The bowl displays a squat form with a rolled top lip. This planter has a wonderful
    curdled
matte green glaze along the upper portion of the piece and a frothy glaze on the lower leaves. It is further accented with overlapping leaves and buds that rise up between the folds of the leaves. These leaves resemble Lily pads with buds of Water Lily flowers. T
he lip is quite thick. This planter has substantial weight for its size. Looking inside the vase you can see Grueby's brown waterproofing glaze.
The vase is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no major cracks, nicks, or chips. There are a few nicks to some of the high points on the leaves but nothing too obtrusive. The planter is signed on the underside bottom with the impressed circular impressed Grueby mark that read "Grueby Faience Co.   Boston U.S.A.". There is also the number "148" incised inside the circular mark. There is also the artist mark of a "P" inside a triangle. This is the mark of the Grueby Pottery artist Miss Norma Peirce.
Of all the art pottery manufacturers of the day, not one single art pottery company had any stronger influence on the Arts and Crafts pottery movement than Grueby. Grueby Pottery has always proven a worthy investment as they do nothing but rise in value year after year. I would say this piece of art pottery was made circa 1904-1909 as the records shows that Norma Peirce was listed as a modeler as of 1904. This piece would look outstanding on that Stickley, mission, arts and crafts style bookcase. I'm sure the buyer will be extremely happy with their purchase.
